Technical Specs:
It can be confusing when choosing the right type of upholstery elastic.
- KNIT ELASTIC is made by knitting the fibres together. It is softer than braided elastic as it contains less rubber and is great for light to mid-weight fabrics. It can be sewn directly to the material, or put into a casing, and is not going to narrow when it is stretched or distort when pierced with a pin or needle.
- BRAIDED ELASTIC contains more rubber than knitted elastic and has parallel ridges which run lengthwise. These attributes provide greater grip, making it more suitable for heavy fabrics than knitted elastic. However, the braided elastic will narrow when stretched and may lose its strength if pierced with a needle. For this reason, the braided elastic is best used in casings, rather than sewn directly into fabrics.
